The Sri Lanka Sub-Aqua Club was formed in September of 1985 by a group of diving enthusiasts led by a marine biologist. The principal aim was to train those interested in learning scuba diving, particularly marine biologists.
The club offered free courses in diving and conducted supervised open-water dives for its divers. It adopted a constitution that provided for, inter alia, promotion of underwater exploration, marine science, sport and the promotion of safety in all aspects of these and related underwater activities; being available to assist and/or advise the Government and other agencies on matters pertaining to underwater research and exploration and on matters dealing with scuba and snorkel diving as sports; and the promotion of and engagement in activities aimed at the conservation of the marine environment and its biodiversity.
The Club’s training courses were extremely popular and many divers were trained over the years.
In 2004 the Club was reorganized with the intention of concentrating on activity related to conservation, reef monitoring, advocacy, biodiversity studies and diving safety – particularly among the large numbers of self-trained ornamental fish and other collectors. Training courses were not required due to the many diver centers that had been setup over the years.
We hope the Club will be a focal point for recreational and scientist divers, marine biologists, nature lovers and conservationists wishing to protect Sri Lanka’s marine resources from the ever growing numbers of people engaged in unsustainable forms of fisheries.
